Auritz/Burguete and Aurizberri/Espinal are located right in "the most wickedly wild and savage territory of the Pyrenees" according to Ernest Hemingway; it is indeed an area of fascinating beauty crossed by the Pilgrim's Way.
Both towns grew up in a straight line along the Pilgrim's Way to attend to the pilgrims that arrived from Europe via the Pyrenees.
Along the way they left thousands of stories that add to the glorious past of these lands, through which Roman legions marched on their campaigns in Hispania or where the Basques defeated Charlemagne's rearguard in the 8th century.
